The closest thing to shop for that resembles a Managed Fund is probably a Crisco Christmas hamper. You choose the hamper or fund that fits your needs best and then start investing your money into it. Come Christmas when you need the hamper you hope to get what was originally promised but the hamper may differ due to stock availability or supply problems. A Managed Fund cannot promise what your investment will be worth when you are ready to sell the units but you hope the Fund Manager has done their job well and your investment has delivered the results you are after.
The Fund manager will generally invest your money and that of the other unit holders in a combination of shares, unit trusts and cash. When you buy into a managed fund, you buy a unit in the fund rather than a share of the fund. The Fund Manager will then use your money and everyone else’s to buy into other investments that they think will give you the best return as per the prospectus. Most Superannuation Funds use Managed Funds to invest your super monies.
You can get the fund investment breakdown, which usually includes a pie chart and past performance figures on the funds website and make sure you look at these as carefully as you would an individual company’s shares. You will pay a fee to the Fund Manager to invest your money on your behalf and fees can differ between funds.
